Smoke Damage Restoration: Saving a London Restaurant from a Full Refit

A fire broke out in the ground-floor utility room of a busy London restaurant, where the refrigeration units were kept. It was contained before it could spread far, but smoke had already travelled throughout the building, leaving significant contamination across the interior, including the first-floor dining area.

For the owner, the fire was only half the problem. In a competitive part of London, an extended closure meant lost trade, lost regulars and momentum handed to nearby competitors. The conventional route, a full strip-out and refit, would have been expensive, disruptive and slow. The owner wanted a faster, less invasive way back to reopening.

The approach

LaserTec was asked to carry out a single day of laser cleaning in the first-floor seating area, as a live trial to see how quickly a smoke-damaged space could be brought back to a decoration-ready condition. Laser cleaning removes smoke and soot contamination without chemicals, water or abrasive media, lifting the damage while leaving the underlying surface intact and ready for redecoration, and without the mess and drying time of other methods.

The owner had also invited a dry ice cleaning company to quote, giving a direct comparison between two modern restoration methods on the same job.

The result

After one day on site, the decision was straightforward. The owner instructed LaserTec to complete the cleaning across the main restaurant, having concluded that laser cleaning was more cost effective than a full refit and got the space ready for redecoration faster and with far less disruption.

Working at around 150 square metres per week, LaserTec returned the smoke-damaged areas to a decoration-ready state on a timeline that supported a quicker reopening, rather than the drawn-out closure a full refit would have forced. By avoiding that refit, laser cleaning carried the potential to significantly reduce the associated insurance claim while getting the business trading again far sooner.
